The Something Valentine’s Day Ever

Cassanda and I started dating on February 2nd, 2008.  It just so happens that Valentine’s Day was less than 2 weeks later.  So, here is this nerdy, not especially romantic type guy who has never bought flowers for a girl, apart from his mother, that is supposed to do something special for his girlfriend.  Also keep in mind that I had a Thursday class that went from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, and Valentine’s day was on Thursday.

Leading up to the 14th, I spend many hours in my room folding origami flowers for Cassanda, while also trying to do homework.  In the end I had 2 or 3 dozen folded flowers in a large glass bowl with random snacks that she liked at the bottom.  Those flowers are still in our Curio cabinet as a matter of fact.  On the 14th, between classes, I went and dropped of this present, along with real flowers, at Cassanda’s apartment.  I didn’t really see her much before my class at 7:00.  I’ve found that it is really hard to something special for someone when you are not there to do something special for someone.

BYU-Idaho, the university we were going to, is one of the few universities that has a curfew.  Interestingly, I didn’t have a curfew growing up, mainly because I never went anywhere so what was the point, but then had one when I went to college.  The curfew was at 12:00.  I had from 10:00 to get back from my class, spend quality time with Cassanda and then get back home before 12:00.

After my class got out, I rushed to Cassanda’s apartment.  So, what is there to do in a town that closes at 10:00, when it is past 10:00.  We went to the lounge in my apartment complex, and we talked, and I played the guitar and sang for her.  Other than the song, “You Belong to Me,” which she thought sounded overly possessive at the time, but really likes now, I think my music skills really paid off.  We have also found that the time in our relationship that we spend talking with each other is the most rewarding time we spend.

In the end, the effort won out, and Cassanda decided to keep dating me.  Now all I had to do was plan how to make her birthday special in only a few weeks, and also, unfortunately, on a Thursday.
